Tsunoda associated with Honda-supported IndyCar transition.
"I think we’ll know more next week."
Yuki Tsunoda’s future in Formula 1 is still uncertain, with new rumors indicating that the Japanese driver might move to IndyCar if Red Bull chooses not to keep him for 2026. Red Bull has not yet made a decision on whether Tsunoda will remain with the main team, go back to Racing Bulls, or lose his seat entirely. Speculation about other options is increasing, especially with Honda shifting its support to Aston Martin from 2026. Former F1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve expressed to Sky UK that he feels Tsunoda’s time in the sport may be dwindling. "He’s still quite far behind his teammate," Villeneuve stated. "He’s not contributing anything beneficial—neither in speed, points, nor assisting Max with the championship. He has significant experience, and we’ve seen his potential, but he seems to be declining, so it appears they’re protecting him for some reason." This protection might be linked to Honda, which has consistently backed Tsunoda throughout his career and may still wish to include him in its racing framework. IndyCar insider Tony Donohue mentioned that Tsunoda has become a contender for a Honda-supported position at Dale Coyne Racing. "There’s been talk of Yuki Tsunoda possibly being in that No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing with Honda support for 2026," Donohue shared on the Unverified podcast. "I think we’ll find out next week—and I don’t anticipate him returning to his F1 seat." Although some analysts had previously connected Tsunoda with Alpine—who still has a 2026 opening—that position now seems set for Franco Colapinto, whose extension is likely to be announced at the forthcoming Brazilian GP. Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya recently suggested that a move outside F1 might be Tsunoda’s only viable choice. "Tsunoda joining Alpine could be the unexpected turn that surprises everyone," he remarked. "But if he misses out, he’ll either be a reserve or need to seek other opportunities—effectively moving on from Formula 1."
