Mexican authorities attribute the near-miss involving the marshal to Lawson.
"He kept his steering angle constant without altering his path."
Mexico’s motorsport authority has held Liam Lawson accountable for the alarming incident during Sunday’s Mexican GP when two marshals dashed across the track in front of his vehicle. The Racing Bulls driver expressed disbelief after narrowly avoiding the officials, stating, "I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Obviously, there’s been some miscommunication, but I’ve never encountered anything like this before - it's quite unacceptable. We cannot comprehend how marshals can be permitted to run across a live track. Such an incident must not happen again."
Initially, the FIA seemed to attribute the blame to local organizers, indicating that once Lawson entered the pits, marshals were instructed to stand down. "We are still looking into what transpired after that," the organization said in a statement.
However, OMDAI - Mexico’s national motorsport federation - has released a statement suggesting that Lawson was partially responsible. "Upon reviewing the onboard footage, it is evident that driver Liam Lawson initiated his turn into Turn 1 while marshals were distinctly visible performing their intervention duties," stated OMDAI. "The closeness of the car to the work area indicates that marshals were still active, carrying out cleaning and safety operations on the track. The footage clearly illustrates that Lawson maintained his steering angle without changing his path, despite the marshals crossing to return to their positions, all while personnel were still working in that vicinity."
