Grosjean got back the helmet that saved him in Bahrain.
On November 29, 2020, on the first lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix, one of the most dramatic crashes in the history of modern Formula 1 occurred. At the time we analyzed it in detail, but it’s worth repeating: the fact that Romain Grosjean, then driving for Haas, survived and suffered only burns to the backs of both hands should be considered a miracle.
But it is also important to emphasize that the incident confirmed the correctness of the path taken by the FIA and Formula 1 in putting maximum attention on safety issues.
Yesterday the French driver shared on social media a photo of his charred helmet, which he wore when he took the start at the Bahrain race a little over five years ago. As Romain explained, his children were keen to understand how the helmet was able to protect him even in such a horrific ordeal.
“Five years after November 29, 2020, I have my racing helmet back,” Grosjean commented. “I didn’t know if I was ready to see it again, but my children really wanted to understand how I was so well protected from the fire, and what happened that evening.
I will be forever grateful to Bell and Alpinestars for protecting me so well in that moment. Life goes on, and much is forgotten, but all of this serves as a reminder of how highly we should value every day we live.”
In just half a day, the photos Romain shared had gathered nearly one hundred thousand views and many comments, whose authors involuntarily recalled their own worries felt back then, when they watched the alarming events unfold on the Sakhir circuit during the live broadcast.
The championship organizers tried to draw lessons from that incident, after which comprehensive safety measures in Formula 1 became even more stringent.
