«Parece que podría funcionar» para Verstappen
El resurgimiento de Max Verstappen a final de temporada cobró más impulso en Austin, donde ambos pilotos de McLaren chocaron en la primera vuelta del sprint, otorgando a Red Bull una ventaja psicológica crucial de cara al gran premio del domingo.
Lando Norris y Oscar Piastri fueron eliminados en la Curva 1 tras una reacción en cadena que involucró a Nico Hülkenberg y Fernando Alonso. Los jefes de McLaren, Zak Brown y Andrea Stella, inicialmente culparon al piloto de Sauber, tildándolo de "poco profesional", pero más tarde rectificaron sus críticas.
"Los McLaren quizás se olvidaron de que había otros coches en la carrera", dijo Hülkenberg a Canal Plus.
El mánager de Piastri, líder del campeonato, Mark Webber, estuvo de acuerdo y describió el incidente como "un típico accidente de salida".
"Alonso estaba por el interior, Nico reaccionó para evitar chocar con él, y Oscar se colocó para adelantar a Lando por el interior", explicó Webber. "Él estaba por delante de los demás, así que tenía derecho a hacerlo. Para mí, no hay un culpable principal."
Los dos abandonos pusieron fin a un día miserable de sprint para McLaren, con Verstappen dominando la acción mientras Piastri ha tenido problemas de ritmo durante todo el fin de semana.
"Norris está en una buena posición", observó el comentarista de Sky Deutschland Timo Glock tras la clasificación principal. "Pero la pregunta es: ¿qué le pasa a Oscar Piastri? La brecha entre los dos McLaren de repente es tan grande.
"Consistentemente va demasiado lento a lo largo de toda la vuelta: o no siente los neumáticos y el coche, o es la situación mental. El que se está aprovechando es Max Verstappen. Parece que las cosas van por mal camino en McLaren."
El Dr. Helmut Marko, de Red Bull, dijo que el equipo debe seguir presionando su ventaja. "Tenemos que seguir ganando ahora", afirmó.
"Aún quedan algunas carreras con primeras curvas emocionantes. No tenemos nada que perder. Se puede ver que Piastri está cometiendo errores - ¡bien! Veamos cómo el incidente ha mermado la confianza de los McLaren.
"Max va de un pico al siguiente", sonreía el octogenario de 82 años.
El jefe de Mercedes, Toto Wolff, coincidió en que la dinámica del título está cambiando. "Ahora las cosas se están poniendo complicadas", dijo cuando le preguntaron por la situación de McLaren. "Max se acerca cada vez más.
"En algún momento, McLaren tendrá que tomar una decisión respecto a un piloto número 1."
El embajador de Aston Martin, Pedro de la Rosa, dijo a DAZN que la mentalidad del quadruple campeón mundial es ahora un factor importante. "Él (Verstappen) no tiene nada que perder", afirmó de la Rosa.
"No hay nada mejor que mentalmente darte por descartado y luego empezar a ver la recompensa de nuevo. Aún quedan muchos puntos por ganar, y la tendencia es hacia una remontada."
Marko dijo que, con la diferencia con Piastri "todavía de 55 puntos", internamente se había fijado "recuperar 15 puntos aquí en Austin - y parece que podría salir bien".
El propio Verstappen se mantiene cauto. "No se trata de creer en ello", dijo a los periodistas. "Solo lo tomo carrera a carrera.
"Hoy fue perfecto para mí, me acerca un poco, seguro, lo cual es bueno para todos, quizá no para ellos", sonrió.
"Pero no estaba del todo contento con el ritmo en la carrera. Si queremos ganar mañana, tenemos que ser mejores. En eso me voy a centrar."

The car’s behavior became less predictable, and that led to Alex not being able to fully unlock the FW47’s potential. But I’m confident that overall the car is effective, and he will be able to make up positions.”
Carlos Sainz (9th): “It was another successful day, and I’m pleased with how qualifying went. We executed cleanly, and the car was capable of a strong pace, but unfortunately the wind picked up for the final session and it became harder to drive.
That said, ninth place is broadly in line with our performance. I’m in a confident mood ahead of tomorrow’s race, and I hope to put on a show that gives these wonderful fans another reason to cheer!
Our job is to fight our way forward through the pack. I hope we can keep up with the cars starting from higher positions. And the ultimate goal is to score as many points for the team as possible, so we’ll be focusing on the race.”
Alex Albon (19th): “The day started fairly normally, we had a good sprint, avoided trouble, gained a few positions and picked up a few points.
Already on Friday we found that my car had differential problems, and before the sprint we couldn’t make setup changes in time, so in qualifying the car had completely different settings and balance.
Now we need to analyze the telemetry data in detail, but I felt that the understeer was more pronounced than usual. Overall the changes were the right ones, but we should have worked on the setup for longer, and there was no time left for that.
It’s a shame that my final quick lap was deleted due to going off track, as we should have at least made it into the second session. We’ll see how tomorrow unfolds.”
