A twist involving Tsunoda and Honda has surfaced in Red Bull's plans for 2026.
Red Bull is set to conclude months of speculation next week, as confirmed by Dr. Helmut Marko, but last-minute rumors in the paddock indicate that the anticipated 2026 lineup may differ from what many expected. It has been widely assumed that Isack Hadjar would advance from Racing Bulls to team up with Max Verstappen, while Tsunoda and Lawson would compete for one seat, with Arvid Lindblad likely making his debut with the junior team. However, Dutch commentator Olav Mol suggests that the internal situation might be changing once more.
Tsunoda achieved what could be seen as his best qualifying effort for Red Bull in Qatar, prompting Mol to speculate whether that was a result of newfound clarity behind the scenes. "What if they told Yuki yesterday, 'Mate, it’s been fun, but you’re not driving here next year?'" Mol said with a smile. "Then all the tension would be lifted. You’d suddenly feel liberated."
Mol indicated that the key individuals likely already know their destinies. "Yuki mentioned he’s aware of what’s happening, and it aligns with public speculation. Hadjar stated he will be on the grid regardless. Those individuals have been informed for quite a while," he noted.
However, Mol introduced an unexpected development involving Honda. He pointed out that even though Aston Martin is set to take over the Honda works partnership next year, Honda still retains influence within Red Bull, which could potentially benefit Tsunoda. The reason being is the Testing of Previous Cars (TPC), essential for Lindblad if he is not promoted to a race seat in 2026. "All of Red Bull’s eligible TPC cars are Honda-powered. They require Honda engines at Red Bull," Mol emphasized. "And who are they needed for? For Arvid Lindblad."
The promising teenager has struggled recently and may not be ready to advance to F1 next year after a disappointing run in F2. "Lindblad probably won’t be racing in F1 next year - he hasn't scored anything," Mol remarked. "He requires another year in Formula 2." However, he will need testing mileage in 2026, which means he will need Honda’s support. "So, a deal with Honda is still necessary; otherwise, you'd have to borrow a car from someone else," Mol clarified. "This appears to be the loophole that keeps Tsunoda within the Red Bull organization for 2026."
