McLaren apologized to its drivers.
After the FIA's official documents on the disqualification of both McLaren cars were made public, the team issued a statement in which its management also apologized to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Andrea Stella, team principal: "After the Las Vegas Grand Prix it became clear that we breached Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations, which requires the skid plank thickness to be at least 9 mm. On car No. 4, at the rearmost part of the skid plank it measured 0.12 mm below that minimum, and on car No. 81 it was 0.26 mm below.
During the race both cars experienced unexpectedly intense vertical oscillation (porpoising), which did not appear during practice, and this caused excessively strong contacts with the track surface. We are analysing the reasons for this behaviour, including determining how damage to both cars that we identified after the race affected it, which led to an increase in the amplitude of the underbody movements relative to the track.
As the FIA stressed, the breach of the regulations was unintentional, the team did not make deliberate attempts to circumvent the rules, and there were mitigating circumstances.
We apologise to Lando and Oscar, as they lost points today, and this happened at a critical moment when both are fighting for the championship and had performed well this weekend. The team also apologises to our partners and to the fans, whose support means so much.
This outcome to the weekend is extremely upsetting, but we remain focused and are preparing for the two remaining races of the season."
Lando Norris: "A sad end to the day. Towards the end of the race we had to slow the pace, and now we know that this was related to some faults in the car which, unfortunately, led to the disqualification. We lost a lot of points, and it's very upsetting.
The team always gives everything it can, but today we did a poor job, that’s for sure. Since I can't change anything now, I'll focus entirely on preparing for the Qatar Grand Prix, where we intend to get the maximum out of every session."
Oscar Piastri: "Unfortunately, the weekend ended with us being disqualified due to excessive wear of the skid plank and left us with no points.
With the current closeness of the results we always try to find ways to gain an edge, but this time we made a mistake. Now we need to regroup, adjust our goals and keep attacking to score the maximum points at the two remaining rounds, as we have performed confidently at both of those circuits in the past."
