Villeneuve: Lando gets through the banked corners more effectively than Oscar
Jacques Villeneuve, in his time, even before Formula 1, raced in IndyCar, became champion of the American series and won the classic Indianapolis 500, so he knows how to take banked corners, and there are two of them at Zandvoort – the 3rd and 14th turns. The 1997 world champion noted that the McLaren drivers choose slightly different lines, and Lando Norris manages to claw back some fractions of a second there relative to his teammate.
Jacques Villeneuve: "Lando turns into those corners a little later, and thanks to that he manages to get a more effective exit. Those who turn in earlier unintentionally take a higher line, and although the difference is very small, only a few centimeters, when they exit the corners where the track profile becomes flat again, their cars start to slide a bit. As a result, either the driven wheels begin to spin, or they have to ease off the throttle slightly.
And Norris doesn't need to do any of that: he turns in later, which allows him to exit such corners better… Overall, it seems he's striking back, because he has analyzed what he can do better, how to become stronger, what mistakes he had been making before?
At the same time he doesn't hold back his emotions, unlike Piastri, and what is going on inside the Australian driver's mind we don't know. We think he's performing so well because the pressure isn't affecting him. Although in reality it is possible that the pressure affects him even more than Lando, but we just don't see it…"
