Mercedes were fined, Russell was warned.
Having considered the circumstances of the incident involving Fernando Alonso and George Russell during the third practice session, the stewards fined Mercedes and issued a warning to the driver.
"Car #14 (Alonso) was on a warm-up lap and was exiting Turn 14 when car #63 (Russell) was on a slow lap and had been instructed to enter the pits, but chose a wide line and nearly collided with car #14. Car #63 executed an evasive maneuver, aborted the pit entry and continued on the circuit. Car #14 was forced to abandon the lap and turn onto the pit lane to avoid a collision.
Car #63 had not been warned that car #14 was approaching on a quick lap. The team acknowledged this at the hearing and confirmed that they should have warned the driver of car #63 but did not. As a result, a dangerous situation arose and both cars were forced to perform evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision.
We accept that the driver of car #63 could not have known of car #14's approach, especially given the nature of the circuit and the fact that Turn 14 is a blind corner. A simple glance in the mirrors would not have prevented what happened.
Accordingly, we imposed a €7,500 fine on the team for failing to warn its driver.
Nevertheless, given the nature of the circuit and the low speed at which he was travelling, it would have been sensible for car #63 to have kept to the right, leaving room for faster cars exiting the corner. For this we issue a warning to the driver," the stewards' statement said.
