Button: It's important that Oscar and Lando are allowed to compete.

Jenson Button appeared in the Williams fan zone at Piccadilly Circus in London last night, but he was asked questions not only about his collaboration with this team. In particular, one fan asked him, as a former McLaren driver, whom he personally bets on in the championship rivalry between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

"Both are very fast drivers, and we see how they are both evolving this year," the 2009 world champion replied evasively. "Both are under intense pressure, and it's evident during qualifying sessions – I know these feelings all too well.

But it seems that recently Oscar and Lando have become a bit more relaxed and calm, and watching their intense battles on track is very interesting, because this year's title will go to one of them.

I didn't answer the question directly, but I think it's most important for all of us that they are allowed to compete against each other. McLaren is leading confidently in both championships, so Norris and Piastri should be allowed to fight at full pace, and in Austria, we saw exactly that.

Yes, this may negatively affect the team’s strategy, as the drivers push each other so aggressively, but from an outside perspective, it’s truly thrilling. As always, your teammate is the first rival you need to beat, firstly because you have the same cars. Secondly, you have access to his telemetry.

When you have a great driver as a teammate and you study his telemetry, you learn a lot. If he can't deliver good pace, you don’t trust the settings he chooses. So, of course, a fast teammate pushes you, although I must say that we all in Formula 1 are highly skilled professionals. But we always try to find weaknesses in our teammate’s preparation.

When fighting for the championship, you have to be somewhat ruthless. I found myself in such a situation at McLaren when my opponent was the then-young Lewis Hamilton, who was already a world champion. But I was more experienced, and I was able to spot areas where he needed to improve, and I tried to take advantage of that.

Of course, from the very first day, it was clear how talented he was, but there were still areas where he lacked preparation at that time…
